Jacks or Better strategy: holds, pay tables and budget

Jacks or Better is the classic video poker game: five cards, one draw, and a pay for any pair of jacks or higher. Played well on a full-pay table it returns about 99.5%.

Two things decide your return: the pay table and the cards you hold.

The numbers 9/6 refer to the full house and flush payouts per coin. Dropping to 8/5 costs over 2% of every bet, more than any mistake you are likely to make.

Holds that matter

  1. Any made royal, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush or straight: hold it.
  2. Four to a royal flush: hold the four, even over a made flush.
  3. Three of a kind, then two pair.
  4. A high pair (jacks or better).
  5. Four to a flush, then a low pair.
  6. Two high cards of the same suit, then two high cards.
  7. Otherwise, redraw all five.

Budget in Singapore dollars

A royal comes about once in 40,000 hands. At S$1.25 a hand (five coins of S$0.25) and 600 hands an hour, a 99.54% game costs about S$3.50 an hour on average, but the swings are large. Bring enough for a few hours, or play smaller coins.

Practise in demo mode until the holds are automatic. Many casinos count video poker at a low rate towards bonus wagering.

Play only if you are 21+ and it stays fun

These rules apply on every page of this site. A young casino has less history to judge it by, so the limits matter more.
